Militant demonstration on Human Rights Day in Mumbai
Lok Raj Sangathan organized a militant demonstration in front of Churchgate Railway Station in Mumbai to mark Human Rights Day on the 10 th December. Activists of Lok Raj Sanghathan, men, women and youth distributed thousands of leaflets, shouted slogans and held placards in front of the Churchgate Railway Station from 6 pm to 7.30 pm.
It was evening rush hour and normally office goers would be rushing to catch their trains. But seeing the enthusiasm of the demonstrators many paused and engaged the activists in discussions and asked how human rights violation can be stopped. The leaflet called on people to oppose all attacks on minorities, oppose all infrastructure projects that cause severe environmental degradation and displace massive numbers of people, oppose the Indo-US alliance and oppose interference of the Indian state in the neighbouring countries to further the interests of Indian big business and US imperialists in the region.
The activists shouted “Manipur se sena to Vapas Lo”, “Kale Kanoon radd Karo”, “Nandigram, Gujarat aur 1984 ke gunhegaro ko saja do”, etc. The police intervened and tried to disrupt the peaceful demonstration. Passers by stopped and were asking under which law the police were objecting and how there is no democracy and no right to protest. Others wanted to become members of the organisation. Seeing all the commotion a TV crew passing by stopped and interviewed the spokesperson.
Undeterred by the police the activists enthusiastically continued their propaganda till they ran out of leaflets. The action charged every one of the participants who later dispersed in two and threes discussing how to carry on the work of reaching out to more people, not ready to go even though it was already night fall. |
