Interviews with injured workers in the Civil Hospital, Gurgaon, 26 July 2005
Sandeep Shukla and Vinod Kumar were sharing one bed. While Sandeep had injuries on his head and both legs, Vinod's hand was in plaster. “The management of our factory Honda Motorcycles and Scooters had dismissed 54 workers unfairly, because we formed a Union and were fighting for our wage and other demands. We were demanding that all of them should be taken back. 3000 workers were taking out a rally from Kamla Nehru Park to the Mehrauli Road, when the District Officials asked us to come for negotiations….they asked all of us to sit down and said the Commissioner would address us. They then attacked us all viciously, beating us so badly many of us will not be able to walk for months. It was a pre planned attack.
Even in the hospital they did not take care of us properly. Even now, Sandeep was bleeding and they didn't take care of his stitches. The bed sheets were so dirty, but they have changed them just now because I heard Sonia Gandhi or some other big neta is going to visit…”
Dharamvir “I come form the Jhajhar district of Haryana and have been working in the company in the machine shop for 5 months as a contract worker. The working conditions were very bad. Even to visit the toilet, we had to fill out a form! They had goons on their rolls, enrolled as workers whose only job was to keep others in control. Once, a worker was even kicked! Another time, a Sikh worker was asked to take off his pagri and place it at the managers' feet! The management has locked us out since June 27th and we didn't get our salary for three months now. They said they would take us back in batches of 100 after we gave undertakings…. we were ready to do so but they have not taken us back.
Narendra Kumar had injuries on his legs and head. “We were all sitting peacefully when we were deliberately surrounded just like in Jallianwala Bagh and beaten up mercilessly. We had been locked out for over one and a half months, and hadn't got wages for nearly three months. A Japanese manager had once kicked a worker in the factory! How can we accept these conditions?
Avtar Singh and Inderpal Singh were sharing one bed. “Over 300 workers had gathered outside the Mini Secretariat. The police surrounded us and beat us up to inflict the maximum damage on us. Both of us may not be able to work for many months now. How can we feed our families?
Brijendra Kumar “I am a permanent worker from the machine shop. Yesterday, after clobbering us, they took some of us to various police stations and many are still missing! In the evening, when I was brought to the hospital, they didn't even give us enough water to drink. We finally got attention only a few minutes before the Chief Minister visited the hospital. Though my arm is fractured, all I was given was an injection! There were 10 of us who had been rounded up and pushed into a small room in the Palam Police Chowky… all of us had head injuries. Two of us were sent to this hospital (Civil Hospital, Gurgaon), but I don't know where the other 8 are…
